Saltend Jetty

Hull

VolkerLaser were commissioned to carry out repairs and strengthening works to Saltend Jetty, a busy working jetty used by large vessels to unload sensitive chemicals such as ammonia.

Key Services Provided

Concrete repair and strengthening

VolkerLaser worked with Harbour staff to deliver works promptly and efficiently whilst adhering to the strict health and safety regime.

The job was challenging, largely because of the site's location. Scaffolding was hung from the underside of the jetty, but the rig had to be vacated at high tide, when it was submerged. Environmental considerations added another element of complexity; no grit or dust could be permitted to fall into the sea, so we lay sheeting on the scaffolding – which also had to be lifted clear of incoming tides.

The presence of dangerous and flammable chemicals meant that we could do no work that could create sparks. The team also had to move off the pier whenever a ship docked to unload cargo.
