VolkerLaser was commissioned to carry out repairs and strengthening works to Saltend Jetty, a busy working jetty used by large vessels to unload sensitive chemicals, such as ammonia.
• Concrete Repair
• Strengthening
Originally opened in 1914, significant concrete repair and strengthening works were identified on the structure in order to extend the lifespan of the jetty.
The job was challenging, largely due to the site’s location. In order to create an accessible works area, a scaffolding rig was hung from the underside of the jetty, which had to be evacuated at high tide.
Important environmental considerations added another element of complexity; no grit or dust was permitted to fall into the sea. To eliminate the possibility of this, the team lay sheeting on the scaffolding, which also needed to be lifted and removed at high tide.
VolkerLaser was in constant communication with harbour staff, and worked collaboratively to ensure all works adhered to a strict health and safety regime. Each time a ship docked to unload cargo, the team were required to move off the pier and due to the majority of the vessels containing dangerous and, flammable chemicals, any works undertaken could not create sparks.
