As part of an £18m refurbishment of Wolverhampton Civic Centre, VolkerLaser delivered an innovative repair and cathodic protection system techniques to the Centre’s multi-storey car park.
• Cathodic protection
• Concrete repairs
• Anti-carbonation coating
Containing space for 400 vehicles, the 40-year-old car park itself is an underground structure built using reinforced concrete on three levels beneath the Civic Centre. Working in phases, VolkerLaser utilised a full portfolio of services to complete the refurbishment. Most impressively, VolkerLaser pioneered the design and installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system known as Zebra; the first use of this system in the UK.
VolkerLaser overcame environmental challenges during the project with quick thinking, including pumping away floodwater and minimising noise pollution generated from the works, by installing temporary roofs and ventilation ducts. The 26 week project was completed in September 2016.
VolkerLaser’s work on the Wolverhampton Civic Centre car park has been recognised within the industry, winning ‘Best Refurbishment’ in the British Parking Awards and being Highly Commended in the Celebrating Construction Awards’ ‘Innovation’ category.
