VolkerLaser's sensitive refurbishment of the Grade II listed Ashton Avenue Swing Bridge has been shortlisted within the ‘Project of the Year’ category in the prestigious ICE Awards.
The project involved many phases of complicated and detailed activities, including the reparation of ironwork and removal of concrete slabs to expose the bridge’s structural beams - corroded after years of decay. A new steel deck was also installed to accommodate a guided busway, offering greater structural stability.
Due to the high lead content of blasting and painting works, the bridge was fully encapsulated in an innovative scaffolding solution - providing a safe area of work for all operatives on site.
The ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West.
Following a site visit from the ICE next month, winners will be announced at an award ceremony held at Bristol Science Museum on the 7 July.
The project has also received accolades from the International Safety Awards, as well as shortlisted within VolkerWessels UK’s own Platinum Awards.
