The ICE South West Awards celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West. The Ashton Swing Bridge project showed real excellence, securing the award over a strong line-up of contending finalists.

“This is the second ICE award that VolkerLaser has received in the last 5 years, demonstrating our versatility and commitment in promoting innovation to keep us ahead of our main competitors,” said Anthony Brown, VolkerLaser’s divisional manager. “The key to the successful delivery of the Ashton Avenue Swing Bridge project was our proactive and collaborative team, who were fully committed to delivering a high quality project under difficult conditions, working closely with our client, their professional advisers and other stakeholders to achieve this objective."

The Project

A Grade II listed structure on Bristol Council’s ‘listed building at risk’ register, Ashton Avenue Swing Bridge had been rapidly deteriorating and was in considerable need of a refurbishment. The Bridge has formed part of a local access cycle route for many years, and is part of the Bristol Metrobus project, meaning the structure is vital to local transport and connectivity.
