M4 Dark Lane & Redhill Motorway Bridges

Bradfield

VolkerLaser are currently working on a 32 week project for Highways England, removing and replacing the central span beams on both Dark Lane and Redhill bridges on the M4 motorway adjacent to the village of Bradfield.

Key Services

  • Concrete repairs
  • New bearings
  • Surfacing
  • Expansion joints
  • Waterproofing

As the primary ECI partner for Kier Highways, through the Gateway Process, VolkerLaser were responsible for all programming, supplier co-ordination, cost compilation and risk analysis/ mitigation aspects. Due to both bridges being ‘live’ and just 2km apart, VolkerLaser workedhard to minimise overall disruption by using traffic management systems.

The original programme had the removal and replacement of beams from the bridge decks running over three weekends, consisting of full M4 closures. However, VolkerLaser lifted both bridge decks in one weekend and subsequently, lifted both new ones back during a different weekend, thereby reducing both disruption to the public, and the overall costs of closing the M4 for a third weekend.
