The M90 Masterton Viaduct is a 10-span structure that carries M90 motorway traffic over the Inverkeithing to Glenrothes railway line and the A823(M) slip road.

Starting in November 2025, the full scope of works includes concrete repairs, the design and implementation an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection system (ICCP), and the application of an anti-graffiti coating as well as the installation of the required temporary works.

To deliver the necessary works, access roads and scaffolding have been installed to allow safe access to piers and across the railway. To date the project team has completed hydro demolition to break out deteriorated concrete, and undertaken concrete repairs to the abutments and support piers. Preparation to remove the existing motorway barriers has also begun.

The remaining works to be completed include the installation of the ICCP to severely corroded areas, while Galvanic Anodes will be installed on patch repairs. Once these have been installed an overlay of fresh concrete will be applied to all repaired areas followed by an anti-graffiti coating.

Works ongoing at the M90 Masterton Viaduct

During the course of the programme so far, the team have encountered numerous challenges including a prolonged period of rain throughout January and February. Meanwhile, the project has benefited from collaborative working with Network Rail, while also maintaining a steady flow of traffic to and from the Queensferry Crossing.

Works are expected to be complete in mid-July 2026.

We extend our thanks to our partners at BEAR Scotland, our dedicated VolkerLaser teams, and our supply chain for their efforts to date. We look forward to seeing the continued progress in the coming months.
