Work to the A3 Dennis Interchange

The scheme aims to reduce the need for disruptive maintenance in the future while providing drivers a safer and smoother journey. The full scope of works includes, concrete repairs, the installation of an Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) System, joint replacement, refurbishment of existing bearings, waterproofing, resurfacing and the installation of a Vehicle Restraint System (VRS).

Enabling works commenced in May 2026, creating new access areas to the east and west abutments, following approval from the local council. Vegetation was cleared to make space for new concrete ramps and the installation of scaffolding.

Our specialist team have completed the required concrete repairs on both abutments, with the quantity of repairs increasing by 40% compared with the original scope of works. The team will now begin to install discrete anodes, followed by the ICCP system, with these activities taking place during daytime shifts under the lane closures.

Waterproofing on A3 Dennis Interchange

The top deck works are being completed 24/7, with road closures in place during six weeks of night shifts. During these closures, the northbound and southbound carriageways are undergoing refurbishment. This process involves removing the verges down to deck level, preparing the surface, waterproofing the deck using GCP Eliminator waterproofing and bond coat SA1030, reinstating the verges, and undertaking condition surveys of the bearings. Once these activities are complete, The VRS can then be installed, followed by deck resurfacing and joint replacement. The refurbishment process has now been completed on both lanes of the southbound carriageway. On the northbound carriageway, the team has progressed to the waterproofing stage on the first bridge deck.

Leaving a lasting positive legacy is a key part of VolkerLaser’s culture. Throughout the project, the site team has undertaken litter-picking initiatives to enhance the local environment, utilising the planned road closures. The team has also worked collaboratively alongside other contactors on site, helping to maximise efficiency and coordinate activities effectively.

Despite external factors effecting the programme, the team has remained focussed on maintaining progress and delivering works efficiently. As a result, works are expected to finish on time with site demobilisation commencing in December 2026. Following completion of the main works, the new ICCP system will be monitored through to contract completion in March 2027.
