Opening doors to industry: University of Surrey visits Loudwater Viaduct

This month, the Loudwater Viaduct project team welcomed more than 60 first-year civil engineering students from the University of Surrey to site, providing a valuable insight into the delivery of the £23 million bridge refurbishment project.

VolkerLaser is an approved employer partner of the University of Surrey and Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE) scholarship scheme. The scheme matches successful civil engineering students with a suitable company midway through their first year, enabling them to gain practical industry experience throughout their studies. By welcoming students to projects such as Loudwater Viaduct, VolkerLaser hopes to inspire the next generation of engineers and encourage further interest in the scholarship scheme.

The visits began with an introductory presentation, providing an overview of the project, its objectives, and the complex civil engineering challenges involved in the refurbishment of the viaduct. The students were also given an insight into the wide range of roles that contribute to the successful delivery of a major infrastructure project. Following the presentation, the students participated in an engaging Q&A session, discussing topics ranging from engineering, design and temporary works to programme management and commercial considerations.

The students were then taken on a guided site tour, which included access onto the suspended access scaffolding, allowing them to see the works up close. The tour showcased the innovative jacking system currently in operation, alongside concrete repair and protective coating activities being undertaken to extend the life of the structure.

The visit concluded with a final discussion, allowing students to reflect on their experiences and consolidate the insights gained throughout the day. Opportunities like these are a fantastic way to bridge the gap between academic study and real-world engineering, helping to inspire the next generation of civil engineers.

“Creating opportunities for aspiring engineers to experience live construction projects is incredibly important for our industry. It was fantastic to see the students engage with the engineering challenges, ask insightful questions, and gain first-hand experience of the works at Loudwater Viaduct. We look forward to welcoming more students to site in the future.”
