VolkerLaser delivers corrosion protection works at Colmore Row
VolkerLaser has been appointed by RED Construction to deliver a new Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system to number 90 Colmore Row.
Situated in the heart of Birmingham, Colmore Row was originally built in 1917 and is now being redeveloped into a luxury workspace. Due to the construction method used during the 20th Century the building has been affected by Regent Street Disease. This is when the steel frame beneath the exterior stone corrodes, causing cracking and displacement of the cladding.
For VolkerLaser, the full scope of works includes renewing the existing ICCP system over 11 zones across the façade of the building, with over 1,100 metres of ribbon anode and over 1,000 metres of titanium wire installed.
Works began in March 2026, with the team collaborating closely with both RED Construction and the designer Corrosion Engineering Solutions. Progress so far has seen the team carefully chase out the existing mortar joints from zone one to eight, to enable the installation of the new ICCP system while preserving the building’s historic character and aesthetic appearance. This process will be carried out on the remaining zones. The outstanding scope also includes running field cables into the building and connecting them to their associated junction boxes, as well as installing new power cables. These will be routed discretely throughout the building to minimise visual impact before being connected to the TR panel, which will be installed in the lower basement.
This redevelopment has involved the complete refurbishment of the building, requiring the team to work alongside multiple contractors, in a different environment to their usual projects. Despite this, the team has adapted exceptionally well topping the client’s safety leaderboard for six consecutive weeks. Progress has been strong throughout the duration of the project so far, with significant advancements made across our scope of works.
