Work experience at VolkerLaser: a week behind the scenes
Last week, we welcomed two students from Tudor Grange Academy in Worcester, for a week-long work experience placement at our Oldbury site.

Bavi Velupillai and Isla Henderson were among a group of students who attended an Open Doors site tour at Oldbury back in March. Inspired by what they saw and eager to explore careers in engineering, both students expressed an interest in returning for a placement. The Oldbury team, led by project manager Simon Dhillon, curated an engaging and informative week-long programme that offered real insight into the delivery of a live construction project.
Over the course of the week, Bavi and Isla gained an insight into multiple areas of the business. These included health and safety, site supervision, planning, project management, and quantity surveying, as well as learning more about our cathodic protection capabilities. Through a combination of site visits, hands-on activities and job shadowing, they developed an understanding of the technical, commercial and operational roles that contribute to successful project delivery.

The placement also introduced them to key project tools such as Primavera P6 and CEMAR, and highlighted the importance of planning, collaboration and compliance within a construction setting.
Thanks to the support of the Oldbury team, both students had a positive and rewarding experience. We are proud to have provided a platform for young people to explore the wide variety of career pathways in the construction sector and hope the experience has sparked a lasting interest in the industry.
“It was interesting to see how all the roles linked together – especially how drawings translated into real-world problem solving.”
