Works progressing in Newport
Over the past few months, our specialist team has been progressing with essential refurbishment works on the Newport Transporter Bridge.

Refurbishing a Grade I listed structure is far from easy. Over the past few months VolkerLaser has carried out extensive surface preparation and application of protective coatings, critical weld repairs to degraded steelwork, and the ongoing replacement of corroded structural members on the main boom.

Ongoing painting works
Our team has hit a key milestone with the full replacement of the Oblique Stay Cables (OSCs) on both the East and West. These high – tension cables are integral to the structural stability of the boom. They are now turning their attention to the Boom Anchor Cables (BACs) which will be replaced by de-tensioning the existing BACS, disconnecting these from the U-Bolts at the boom and ground – level anchor blocks and then carefully winching and sectioning for removal. The new BACs will then be installed using the reverse sequence to ensure correct tensioning and alignment.
Work is also continuing at ground level on the Eastern approach. Steel beams and elements of the timber deck will be replaced. The motorhouse will also be getting a partial facelift and be repainted green and cream.
